Winter Weather Safety Tips for Pets

As temperatures drop, it’s important to ensure your pets stay safe, warm, and healthy during the winter months. Cold weather can be dangerous for our furry friends, so here are some essential tips to keep them safe: 

Keep Pets Warm

• Limit outdoor time: Pets are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia, so limit their time outside during extreme cold. Short-haired and smaller pets are particularly vulnerable. 
• Provide proper shelter: If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they have an insulated, dry shelter with bedding that’s off the ground. 
• Dress appropriately: Small or short-haired pets may benefit from a sweater or coat when going outside. 

Protect Paws 

• Check for salt and ice: Salt and de-icing chemicals can irritate paw pads. Wipe your pet’s paws after walks to remove any harmful residue.
• Use paw protection: Booties or paw balms can protect sensitive paws from cold and chemicals. 

Avoid Cold Weather Hazards

• Watch for antifreeze: Antifreeze is toxic to pets and has a sweet taste that may attract them. Clean up spills immediately and keep containers out of reach.
• Stay visible: Shorter daylight hours mean more walks in the dark. Use reflective gear for you and your pet to stay visible to drivers. 

Provide Proper Nutrition

• Adjust food intake: Depending on your pet’s activity level, you may need to adjust their food intake. Pets that stay indoors may be more sedentary and gain weight; while pets that go outdoors may burn more calories trying to stay warm. Consult your vet to ensure they’re getting the right nutrition.
• Ensure hydration: Cold weather can dehydrate pets just as quickly as hot weather. Keep fresh, unfrozen water available at all times.

Recognize Signs of Cold Stress

• Watch for shivering, whining, or lethargy: These are signs your pet is too cold. Bring them indoors immediately.
• Check ears and tails: Frostbite commonly affects extremities. Look for pale or blue-tinged skin and seek veterinary care if needed. 

Keep Pets Indoors

• Cats and dogs should be kept indoors during extreme weather. If it’s too cold for you, it’s likely too cold for them.
