Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis, is a potentially zoonotic bacterial infection that can be passed via urine from infected animals into water sources and remain a source of infection to spread to our pets in standing water, moving water, and moist soil. Leptospirosis is prevalent in rural, suburban and urbanized areas. Infection can be contracted with drinking, swimming, wading, or playing in contaminated water/soil. Unfortunately, Leptospirosis infections can spread from pet to owner, too.

Symptoms of leptospirosis infections include flu-like symptoms, but significant cases can lead to kidney and/or liver failure which can require hospitalization care, and ultimately become fatal.

With updated AAHA guidelines, the Leptospirosis vaccine is now considered as part of canine core vaccines along with Rabies and Distemper-Parvo. To reflect these new guidelines, Pet Wellness Clinics now offers Leptospirosis as part our adult canine packages and puppy packages. Leptospirosis will continue to be offered as part of our dog Pet Prime packages.

Vaccination for leptospirosis can help protect your puppy or dog from this fatal disease.

Starting Leptospirosis vaccination initially is a two-shot series. Revaccination is recommended annually to help keep your dog protected. Please ask your veterinarian if you have any additional questions, or if there is a reason your pet should not be vaccinated.
