Not all heroes wear capes—some wear fur, whiskers, and a whole lot of heart. After years of quietly saving lives from behind the scenes, Clinton Spaulding, our beloved blood donor cat, is officially retiring.
Clinton isn’t your average house cat. Laid-back and gentle, he became a lifeline for fellow felines in crisis at Airport Animal Emergi-Center (AAEC), generously donating blood multiple times throughout his career. His calm nature and big heart made him the perfect donor—and his contributions have saved countless lives.
One of the most memorable moments? When a kitten was rushed into AAEC with a dangerously low Packed Cell Volume (PCV) of just 7%. (For context, healthy PCV levels for cats fall between 25–45%.) After receiving a transfusion of Clinton’s blood, the tiny patient perked up and was able to return home with her family. Clinton gave her more than blood—he gave her a second chance.
Now, it’s Clinton’s turn to receive care. After a recent family camping trip, his family found him unwell and rushed him to AAEC, where he was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)—a serious complication of diabetes. Thanks to the fast-acting team at AAEC, Clinton is on the mend, receiving twice-daily insulin and proudly wearing his new Libre Freestyle glucose monitor.
Talk about full circle: the team that once relied on Clinton to save lives was able to return the favor.
As he retires from his duties as a donor, Clinton wants to leave fellow pet parents with one final piece of advice: Fleas can cause severe anemia in cats. Keep your pets protected with regular flea prevention! (And if he could talk, he'd probably throw in a "Meow!" for good measure.)
Thank you, Clinton, for your years of quiet heroism. We’re so grateful for everything you’ve done and we’re so happy you’re still here to soak up all the love, naps, and well-earned treats.
Happy retirement, sweet boy.
