Cutting the Risk and Cost of Dental Disease

It’s that time of the year again — National Pet Dental Health Month. We have some tips for helping your furry ones keep their teeth clean and healthy.

Dental disease affects 70-85% of all dogs and cats older than two years of age. Not only does it damage the gums and teeth, but it also compromises the kidneys, heart and liver.

Here are some signs of dental disease to keep in mind:

• Bad breath
• Loose, discolored or tartar-covered teeth
• Drooling or dropping food from the mouth
• Bleeding from the mouth
• Loss of appetite or loss of weight (this combination can result from diseases of many organs, and early veterinary examination is important)

Nearly two-thirds of pet owners don’t provide the dental care that veterinarians recommend. You don’t want to add to that statistic.
