Acupuncture, an ancient practice originating in China, has been used to promote health and healing in both animals and humans for thousands of years. The practice includes 361 acupoints in humans and 173 acupoints identified in animals.

Conditions Acupuncture Can Help

  • Pain Relief
  • Neurological Disorders
  • Tissue Healing
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Immune System Support

It is also beneficial for chronic conditions such as:

  • Skin problems
  • Asthma and cough
  • Renal failure
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Behavioral issues
  • Thyroid problems
  • Geriatric weakness

Additionally, acupuncture can enhance quality of life, including for cancer or hospice care.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the four key components of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), alongside:

  • Herbal Medicine
  • Food Therapy
  • Tui-na (Medical Manipulation)

It involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to create therapeutic effects. Other techniques may also be used, depending on your pet’s needs.

Is Acupuncture Safe for Pets?

Yes! When performed by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is a safe and effective medical procedure. It requires no pharmaceutical assistance, removing the possibility of overdose and adverse reactions, and can be used with most other traditional and alternative treatments.

What to Expect

  • Session Duration: Each session lasts 20 to 45 minutes, with the first appointment taking longer than follow-ups.
  • When to Expect Results: Some pets may show improvement immediately, while others may need several treatments. Chronic conditions typically require 3 to 5 sessions spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart. Frequency can range from daily to monthly, depending on the condition.
  • Does It Hurt? Rarely! Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, making the process virtually painless. Many pets find it relaxing, with some even falling asleep during treatment.
